Nails Are My Canvas: Episode 3
Welcome back to Nails Are My Canvas!
For Episode 3, I painted an entire California-inspired sunset scene on one nail. This design includes a blended sunset, dimensional blue water, black land, silhouette palm trees and a glowing yellow sun.
Just like Episode 2, the background is what makes this nail art stand out—but this time, I created it without an airbrush machine.
Creating the Sunset Background
I started by swiping red gel polish across the top of the nail. Directly underneath the red, I added orange, followed by yellow.
I then used a thin nail-art brush to blend the three colors together until the harsh lines disappeared and the background had a smooth sunset effect.
The key is to blend the colors without completely mixing them together. You should still be able to see the red, orange and yellow, but the transition between them should look seamless.
I left the bottom portion of the nail clear so I would have room to add the water.
Adding Dimension to the Water
For the water, I applied dark blue gel polish to the bottom of the nail. I then used a sponge tool to dab light blue over the dark blue.
That small step gave the water more dimension and kept it from looking like one flat block of color.
Bringing the Scene Together
Once the sunset and water were complete, I painted the black land and added the silhouette palm trees. I finished the scene with a yellow sun against the blended background.
Each part of the nail is simple on its own, but when everything comes together, it creates a complete miniature landscape.

This episode is a perfect example of what Nails Are My Canvas means to me. I took a sunset landscape that would normally be painted on a regular-sized canvas and recreated it in the small space of one nail.
If you try this design, focus on building your background first. Blend the sunset, add dimension to the water and then layer your scenery on top.
